PRESENTING EDUTAINMENT IN ACTION
piątek, 9 maja 2008
Marcin Polak was invited by the US Department of Treasury and the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development to speak at the US International Conference on Financial Education in Washington D.C. May 7-8, 2008. He presented the Polish experience in implementing financial education programs through electronic delivery methods, namely mass media and Internet. His presentation has been named "Edutainment in Action" and is available through at the Slideshare.
This presentation focuses on the Polish central bank (National Bank of Poland) experience. The NBP decided in 2005 to move away from traditional forms of economic education projects and embrace more sophisticated methods, including nationwide programs in the popular mass media and the Internet. One of the most successful methods applied by the NBP was Edutainment.
The presentation shows four different projects (2006-2008), where the economic or personal finance topics were incorporated into various mass media formats, including a TV show, a TV “eduvertisements” campaign, a radio novel and an interactive educational Internet film portal. All cases were very successful, reaching millions of people and resulting in a significant increase in the economic and personal finance knowledge of the targeted groups.
The key to the success of the programs was a special format – not copying existing formats of media programs but developing and adapting them to the needs of a future Edutainment project. In other words, part of this success can be attributed to the planning and strategy for the program having been worked out by all parties involved in the project before the production process was initiated.
Probably the most innovative forms of the economic and financial education worldwide, were implemented in Poland. In 2002 the National Bank of Poland (the central bank) launched its Program of Economic Education and the Portal of Economic Education - multimedia, edutainment, professional resource of knowledge for students and adults. In 2005 the NBP developed and implemented effective economic and financial edutainment programs in the Polish mass media. Millions of people were offered fun together with the financial knowledge.
